Akpabio emerges APC sole candidate

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has emerged as the sole candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Akpabio secured the party’s senatorial ticket during the APC primary election conducted on Monday as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle.

The Senate President, who currently serves as the 15th President of the Nigerian Senate, was returned unopposed in the exercise, further consolidating his position within the ruling party in Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio first entered the Senate in 2015 when he was elected to represent Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District. However, he lost his re-election bid during the 2019 general elections.

He later made a political comeback in 2023 after reclaiming the senatorial seat and subsequently emerged as Senate President following the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

His emergence as the APC’s sole candidate is expected to strengthen the party’s preparations for the forthcoming general election in the senatorial district.

Political observers say the development reflects Akpabio’s continued influence within the APC and his strong political structure across Akwa Ibom North-West.
