Aston Villa end 30-year trophy drought

Aston Villa produced a stunning performance to defeat Freiburg 3-0 and lift the UEFA Europa League trophy in Istanbul, ending a 30-year wait for major silverware in emphatic fashion.

The English club sealed victory with spectacular goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendia and Morgan Rogers in a memorable final at Besiktas Park on Wednesday night.

Managed by Spanish tactician Unai Emery, Villa dominated the encounter from the opening whistle and capped off a remarkable European campaign with their first major continental title since winning the European Cup in 1982.

Tielemans opened the scoring in the 41st minute with a thunderous volley after connecting brilliantly with a precise cross from Rogers during a well-worked corner routine.

The Belgian midfielder timed his run perfectly before smashing the ball beyond Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu from just inside the penalty area.

Villa doubled their lead moments before half-time through Buendia, who curled a sublime effort into the far corner after Freiburg failed to close him down at the edge of the box.

The Argentine playmaker’s superb strike sent thousands of Villa supporters inside the stadium into wild celebrations as the Premier League side took firm control of the final.

Morgan Rogers completed the rout in the 58th minute when he slid in to convert Buendia’s cross, effectively ending Freiburg’s hopes of a comeback and sparking scenes of jubilation among Villa fans.

The victory marked Aston Villa’s first trophy since winning the League Cup in 1996 and their first European title in 44 years.

It was also another historic achievement for Emery, who further cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s most successful managers in the competition.

The 54-year-old Spaniard has now won the Europa League five times, having previously lifted the trophy three consecutive times with Sevilla between 2014 and 2016, before guiding Villarreal to triumph in 2021.

Speaking before the final, Emery had dismissed suggestions that he was the “king” of the Europa League, but his latest success reinforced his remarkable record in European competitions.

Villa’s triumph was witnessed by club legends Peter Withe and Dennis Mortimer, heroes of the club’s iconic 1982 European Cup victory over Bayern Munich.

In a symbolic tribute to that famous night in Rotterdam, Villa wore white shirts instead of their traditional claret and blue colours, the same kit they wore during the 1982 final.

The victory also completed a remarkable turnaround for Aston Villa under Emery, who took charge of the club in October 2022 when they were struggling near the relegation zone in the Premier League.

Since then, the Spaniard has transformed Villa into one of Europe’s resurgent forces, guiding them to Champions League qualification and now continental glory.

Among the notable figures celebrating the success was Prince William, a well-known Aston Villa supporter, who joined approximately 20,000 jubilant fans inside the stadium.

Hollywood actor Tom Hanks, another prominent Villa fan, also sent a goodwill message to the team before kick-off.

Villa’s Europa League success capped an extraordinary end to the season after they also secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League with a crucial victory over Liverpool last week.

For Freiburg, who were appearing in their first-ever European final, the defeat marked a disappointing end to an otherwise historic campaign.

Despite their efforts, the German side struggled to cope with Villa’s intensity, creativity and attacking quality throughout the contest.

As the final whistle sounded on the banks of the Bosphorus, Aston Villa’s players and supporters celebrated a night that will forever be remembered as one of the greatest moments in the club’s modern history.
