PDP picks Sandy Onor for 2027 presidential race

The Peoples Democratic Party has announced former Cross River State governorship candidate, Sandy Onor, as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

The announcement was made on Tuesday at the party’s national secretariat, Wadata Plaza in Abuja, during the collation and presentation of the party’s presidential primary results.

Chairman of the PDP Presidential Primaries Collation Committee and former Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, declared Senator Onor as the party’s consensus choice after consultations and voice votes conducted among party members across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

According to members of the collation committee, the process followed extensive engagements with stakeholders and delegates of the party nationwide, culminating in a consensus arrangement ahead of the official announcement.

Senator Onor emerged as the sole presidential aspirant after formally declaring his intention to contest the presidency and obtaining his expression of interest and nomination forms earlier in the month.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Ortom stated that the committee had carefully consulted with party members and leaders across the country before arriving at the decision to adopt Onor as the party’s standard-bearer for the 2027 election.

Following the declaration, the PDP leadership presented a certificate of return and the party’s flag to Senator Onor, officially confirming his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate.

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, including National Commissioners Abdullahi Zuru and Rhoda Habor Gumus, monitored the exercise alongside other commission representatives at the party headquarters.

The development marked a significant step in the PDP’s preparations for the 2027 general elections as the opposition party intensifies efforts to reposition itself ahead of the next presidential contest.

Political analysts believed the adoption of a consensus candidate may be aimed at preventing internal divisions and presenting a united front as the party strategizes to reclaim power at the national level.

The emergence of Senator Onor is expected to shape political conversations within the opposition camp and set the stage for renewed alignments ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
