LP names Okereke 2027 presidential candidate

The Nenadi Usman-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has officially announced Chibuzo Okereke as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election following what the party described as a broad consensus among stakeholders.
The decision was confirmed in Abuja on May 30, 2026, through a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa.
According to the party, Okereke’s emergence reflects internal agreement and a shared commitment to presenting a candidate they believe represents competence, reform and national transformation.
Consensus-Driven Selection
The party explained that Okereke was chosen after consultations with members and key stakeholders across different levels of the organisation.
It described the process as inclusive and aimed at producing a candidate capable of uniting the party ahead of the 2027 polls.
Okereke’s nomination was formally affirmed during party deliberations held in the Federal Capital Territory.
In its statement, the Labour Party presented Okereke as a governance expert, policy strategist and reform advocate with extensive experience in public administration and legislative processes.
“A distinguished governance expert, policy strategist and reform advocate, Dr. Okereke has built an impressive reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading voices on public policy, legislative governance and institutional development,” the statement read.
The party also noted that he heads the ERGAF-AFRICA Legislative Governance Innovation and Policy Hub, a research and policy institution focused on legislative development and governance reforms.
He is also said to serve as a legislative consultant to committees and senior members of Nigeria’s National Assembly.
Academic And Professional Background
The party further highlighted Okereke’s academic credentials, describing him as a scholar with advanced training in governance and public policy.
It stated that he holds a PhD in Legislative Governance Studies, along with Master’s degrees in Public Administration and Legislative Studies, both reportedly earned with distinction.
He also serves as a resident lecturer at the Department of Public Policy and Administration at Miva Open University in Abuja, where he contributes to training future public sector leaders.
The Labour Party said Okereke’s combination of academic achievement, professional experience and policy engagement makes him well-suited for national leadership.
It added that his public commentary and policy analysis have earned him recognition in both local and international media spaces.
According to the party, his involvement in governance advocacy, youth empowerment and democratic reforms further strengthens his profile as a reform-oriented candidate.
“Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Okereke has remained committed to nation-building through youth empowerment, educational advancement and democratic reforms,” the statement added.
The party emphasised that Okereke’s emergence aligns with its broader vision of promoting accountable leadership and institutional reform in Nigeria.
It described him as a figure whose leadership philosophy reflects transparency, competence and a commitment to national development.
“His leadership, intellectual depth and proven commitment to good governance embody the vision of competent, accountable and transformational leadership that Nigeria urgently requires at this critical moment,” the party stated.
Okereke’s nomination comes amid ongoing realignments within opposition parties as political groups position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Labour Party faction led by Nenadi Usman continues to consolidate its structure and define its leadership direction following internal disputes within the party.
With this announcement, attention now shifts to how the party plans to build momentum and challenge rival political platforms in what is expected to be a highly competitive presidential race.
