Jonathan’s reluctance not a barrier to leadership — Sani

PDP chieftain Umar Sani has dismissed concerns that former President Goodluck Jonathan’s reported hesitation to contest the 2027 presidential election weakens his political prospects, arguing that reluctance has never prevented leaders from emerging in Nigeria’s political history.

Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, on Tuesday, Sani said several Nigerian leaders initially showed little interest in top political positions but later accepted national responsibilities when called upon.

“Political reluctance has never stopped leaders from emerging,” he said.

He pointed to historical precedents, including the emergence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, arguing that leadership roles are sometimes shaped by national consensus rather than personal ambition.

“When Obasanjo was asked to succeed Murtala Mohammed, he reluctantly accepted and became president,” he stated.

Sani also referenced Obasanjo’s return to power in 1999, insisting that the former president did not actively pursue office at the time.

“Obasanjo’s 1999 comeback was also with reluctance,” he said.

According to him, leadership positions are often the result of national appeal and persuasion rather than outright political pursuit.

“He was called upon to serve,” he added.
Sani maintained that debate over Jonathan’s willingness to contest should not overshadow questions of eligibility and political relevance.

“The issue of whether Jonathan is reluctant does not arise,” he said.

He stressed that Jonathan remained a significant figure in Nigerian politics, having previously served as president.
“Jonathan has been a president before,” he noted.

The PDP chieftain also referenced ongoing legal and political debates surrounding Jonathan’s eligibility, saying recent court decisions have strengthened his position.

“There is an eligibility case on him,” he said, adding that “the court has dismissed the case.”

Sani urged that attention should shift from speculation about Jonathan’s interest in the race to broader considerations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He noted that reluctance has never been a barrier to political emergence in Nigeria, insisting that Jonathan’s reported hesitation should not be seen as a disqualifying factor in future political calculations.
