Edo Closes Three Schools Over Abduction Threat

The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three public secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following a reported security threat targeting students.
The decision comes after a security alert issued by the State Security Service (SSS), which warned of a possible plan by criminal elements to abduct schoolchildren in parts of Edo North.
The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.
Authorities said the measure was taken to safeguard students and school personnel while security agencies intensify surveillance and assess the threat level in the area.
According to officials, intelligence reports indicated that armed groups had been monitoring school environments with suspected plans to launch attacks after previous failed attempts to kidnap residents for ransom.
The report further revealed that a suspect was recently arrested while allegedly carrying out surveillance around one of the affected schools, raising further concern among security operatives.
The state government explained that the closure is a precautionary step aimed at preventing any attack while ongoing security operations continue in the region.
It also assured that students sitting for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would not be disadvantaged, as special security arrangements would be made to allow them access to their examination centres.
Officials added that the schools would remain shut indefinitely until security agencies give clearance for safe reopening.
The government urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security operatives as efforts continue to stabilise the affected communities.
