Tinubu Honours NDC Spokesman on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu has conferred a national honour on Osa Director, the Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria’s pro-democracy movement and the country’s democratic development.
The honour was announced on Friday during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, where the President paid tribute to individuals who played significant roles in the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria.
Osa Director was among approximately 50 distinguished Nigerians recognised for their contributions to the fight against military rule and their efforts toward the restoration and sustenance of democracy in the country.
Speaking during his nationwide Democracy Day address, President Tinubu said the award recipients demonstrated uncommon courage, patriotism and commitment to democratic ideals during some of Nigeria’s most turbulent political periods.
According to the President, many of the honourees endured persecution, detention, harassment, exile and other forms of hardship while advocating for democratic governance and civil liberties.
He noted that their sacrifices helped lay the foundation for the democratic freedoms and institutions currently enjoyed by Nigerians.
“Their commitment and resilience ensured that democracy survived and ultimately flourished in our country,” the President stated while announcing the list of award recipients.
The national honours list comprised a broad spectrum of Nigerians, including journalists, civil rights advocates, political activists, public figures and military officers who contributed to the June 12 democratic struggle and the eventual return to civilian rule.
The recognition of Osa Director has been viewed by political observers as an acknowledgement of his longstanding involvement in democratic advocacy and political communication within Nigeria’s evolving democratic space.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the historic 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.
The day also serves as an opportunity to honour individuals who fought for the restoration of democratic governance following years of military rule.
President Tinubu said the honours were intended not only to celebrate past sacrifices but also to inspire future generations to defend democratic values, uphold the rule of law and contribute positively to national development.
The 2026 Democracy Day celebration featured tributes to pro-democracy heroes, reflections on Nigeria’s democratic journey and renewed calls for national unity, good governance and citizen participation in the democratic process.
For Osa Director and other recipients, the honour represents national recognition of their contributions to strengthening democracy and advancing political freedom in Nigeria.
