Obi Criticises Court Ruling on Party Deregistration

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has criticised a Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of some political parties, warning that it could weaken public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic and legal institutions.

Obi warned that actions perceived to weaken the independence of key national institutions could undermine public confidence in the country’s democratic and legal systems.

In a statement issued by his media office, Obi said strong nations are built on independent institutions that command public trust, stressing that political considerations must not be allowed to undermine democratic structures.

He argued that any action perceived to weaken the independence of the judiciary could further erode citizens’ confidence in the rule of law.

Obi added that the credibility of institutions, particularly the judiciary, plays a critical role in economic stability, noting that investors rely on predictable legal systems when making decisions.

According to him, while investors can manage security, policy, and market risks, uncertainty around the rule of law remains a major deterrent to investment.

He referenced past concerns he raised during the controversy surrounding the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, saying such developments have long-term implications for institutional trust.

“Strong economies are built on trust. Investors can manage security risks, policy risks and even market risks. What they fear most is uncertainty in the rule of law,” he said.
