Uruguay Rescue Late Draw Against Saudi Arabia in Group H Clash

Uruguay came from a goal down to earn a 1–1 draw against Saudi Arabia in their opening Group H match, with Maxi Araújo scoring a late equaliser to deny the Saudis a famous victory.

Saudi Arabia took the lead just before half-time when Abdulelah Al Amri finished calmly in the 41st minute, following a corner situation where goalkeeper Fernando Muslera had earlier saved Hassan Al Tambakti’s header.

After the break, Uruguay grew into the game under coach Marcelo Bielsa, dominating possession and creating several clear chances as they pressed for an equaliser.

Their best opportunity came when Mohammed Al Owais produced a fine save to tip Manuel Ugarte’s effort onto the post, keeping Saudi Arabia in front.

However, Uruguay’s pressure eventually paid off in the 80th minute when Araújo reacted quickest to a rebound after Al Owais parried Federico Viñas’ header, firing home to level the score.

Al Owais was outstanding throughout, making nine saves, including a late stop to deny Federico Valverde in stoppage time and secure a point for Saudi Arabia.

The result leaves Group H finely poised, following earlier surprise results in the group, as Saudi Arabia continue their search for a first knockout-stage appearance since 1994.
