FG to Launch 10,000 Electric Tricycles in August

The Federal Government says it will deploy 10,000 electric tricycles across Nigeria beginning in August 2026 as part of efforts to modernise public transportation and improve the country’s logistics and mobility systems.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Transporters for Tinubu/Shettima 2027 group, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.

He explained that the initiative, which is being coordinated through the North East Development Commission (NEDC), will initially focus on the North-East before being expanded to other parts of the country through regional development commissions.

Shettima said President Bola Tinubu has approved the nationwide expansion of the programme, noting that it forms part of a broader transport reform agenda aimed at building an integrated logistics network across rail, road, air, waterways, and energy systems.

According to him, the administration’s vision is to create a seamless transport chain that connects ports to rail systems, CNG-powered trucks, and final delivery points in markets and communities across the country.

He added that the rollout of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles and infrastructure remains central to reducing transport costs and improving efficiency, particularly for commercial operators and heavy-duty logistics.

Shettima said the government remains committed to supporting transport workers through affordable fuel alternatives, improved infrastructure, and more sustainable fleet options.

“We will continue to stand with Nigerian transporters. We will continue to push for affordable fuel, better logistics systems, and dignified working conditions across all transport sectors,” he said.

He further noted that the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative has already begun to reduce transport costs, claiming that some operators have recorded significant savings compared to traditional fuel usage.

Stakeholders in the transport sector at the event also expressed support for the administration’s reforms, with representatives of transport unions endorsing the Tinubu/Shettima ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Federal Government says the electric tricycle initiative is part of a broader push toward cleaner energy adoption, job creation, and more efficient urban and rural transportation systems across the country.
