ADC Warns Against Alleged Deregistration Plot

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over an alleged attempt to remove the party from Nigeria’s political landscape through court action.
In a statement released on Monday, the opposition party warned that such a move could threaten democratic stability.
The party reacted to a reported Federal High Court judgment involving a suit seeking the deregistration of ADC and four other parties.
ADC described the ruling as inconsistent with constitutional principles and established judicial procedures.
According to the party, the Independent National Electoral Commission had earlier stated there was no legal basis for its deregistration.
The party said INEC maintained that it had complied with all constitutional and electoral requirements.
ADC noted that the electoral commission reportedly opposed efforts to deregister political parties based on political interests.
The party also questioned the handling of the case by Justice Peter Lifu.
It alleged that proceedings continued despite an earlier directive from the appellate court to halt the matter.
ADC argued that the development extends beyond a legal disagreement and could affect Nigeria’s democratic process.
The party further alleged that certain government-linked individuals were involved in promoting the case.
It also criticised the participation of the Attorney-General in the matter, describing the situation as unusual.
According to ADC, the timing of the ruling has generated concern because it followed the party’s nomination of candidates for future elections.
The opposition party warned that attempts to sideline political competitors through judicial means could create instability.
ADC urged political actors to focus on addressing economic and security challenges facing Nigerians.
The party maintained that democracy thrives when opposition voices are allowed to participate freely.
It called for the protection of democratic institutions and respect for the rule of law.
ADC reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing its political activities within the framework of the Constitution.
