Curacao Make History With Ecuador Draw

Tournament debutants Curacao produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after holding Ecuador to a goalless draw and securing the first World Cup point in the nation’s history.
The Caribbean side, appearing at football’s biggest tournament for the first time, relied on an extraordinary goalkeeping performance from captain Eloy Room to frustrate a dominant Ecuadorian team in a Group E clash played in Kansas City on Saturday.
Despite facing relentless pressure throughout the encounter, Curacao emerged with a valuable point that keeps their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive.
Ecuador entered the match as overwhelming favourites, having finished second in the South American qualifying campaign.
However, they were left frustrated by Room, who delivered a remarkable display between the posts.
The Ecuadorians unleashed 28 shots during the contest, with 15 efforts on target, but were unable to find a way past the inspired goalkeeper.
His 15 saves established a new World Cup record for the highest number of saves made by a goalkeeper in a regulation-time match since official records began in 1966.
For Curacao, the result represented a dramatic response to their opening-match disappointment, having suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat against Germany.
Celebrations erupted among the players and supporters at the final whistle as the tiny island nation secured a landmark achievement on the global stage.
“History! Our first ever point at the @fifaworldcup,” Curacao posted on X after the final whistle.
Curacao arrived at the tournament carrying the distinction of being the smallest nation by population ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.
Their achievement has already captured the imagination of football fans around the world, and the draw against Ecuador further strengthened their underdog story.
Adding a touch of royal support to the occasion were Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, who attended the match.
Curacao is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the team’s strong Dutch connection remains evident throughout the squad.
Of the 26 players selected for the World Cup, 25 were born in the Netherlands, while the team is managed by veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat.
The game began at a frantic pace, with Ecuador creating an early opportunity inside three minutes.
Veteran striker Enner Valencia broke through the Curacao defence, but Room reacted brilliantly to push the effort away.
Curacao also threatened on the counterattack, with Sherel Floranus testing Ecuador’s defence as the Caribbean side looked dangerous whenever they ventured forward.
As the first half progressed, Ecuador controlled possession and territory, but Curacao’s defensive organisation and Room’s heroics ensured the scores remained level heading into the break.
The pressure intensified after halftime. Gonzalo Plata came close to breaking the deadlock with a powerful header, only for Room to produce another outstanding save.
Ecuador continued to dominate proceedings and repeatedly launched attacks in search of a winning goal.
However, growing frustration became evident as chance after chance went begging.
Late in the game, substitute Angelo Preciado nearly snatched victory when his attempted cross looped dangerously onto the crossbar before going out of play.
By the final whistle, Ecuador had been unable to convert their superiority into goals, while Curacao’s players rushed towards their goalkeeper in celebration of a historic result.
The draw also highlighted Ecuador’s struggles in front of goal.
The South Americans have now failed to score in their opening two matches of the tournament, continuing concerns about their attacking effectiveness.
Reacting to the result, Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece admitted his disappointment but praised the effort of his players.
“There are things you cannot explain in football,” said Beccacece.
“We wanted to win, we didn’t do it. I am the one who is responsible and I’ve told my team, if I see that you are giving it all competing, I have no complaints. No one wants to miss out on scoring.”
Elsewhere in Group E, four-time world champions Germany secured a 2-1 comeback victory over Ivory Coast in Toronto to book their place in the Round of 32.
Germany’s victory, combined with Curacao’s draw, guarantees the European giants top spot in the group.
Attention now shifts to the final round of group matches, where Ecuador face a difficult encounter against Germany, while Curacao will attempt to continue their remarkable World Cup adventure against Ivory Coast.
For a nation making its debut appearance on football’s grandest stage, the draw against Ecuador will be remembered as a historic milestone and a testament to resilience, determination and belief against overwhelming odds.
