Haaland Fires Norway Into World Cup Round of 32
Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway beat Senegal 3–2 in New Jersey to secure a place in the World Cup last 32.
The Manchester City striker continued his outstanding international form, taking his tournament tally to four goals in two matches.
His latest brace also made him Norway’s leading World Cup scorer of all time.
Norway opened the scoring late in the first half through Marcus Pedersen.
Pedersen, introduced as an early substitute, capitalised on a defensive error by Kalidou Koulibaly.
The full-back converted after a poor clearance from the Senegal captain.
Norway carried their lead into the break after a controlled first-half performance.
Haaland then took control of the match immediately after the restart.
Erling Haaland latched onto a precise through ball from Martin Ødegaard to score in the 48th minute.
The finish doubled Norway’s advantage and marked his record-breaking World Cup goal.
Senegal responded through Ismaila Sarr, who reignited hopes with a well-taken strike.
Sarr’s goal reduced the deficit and briefly shifted momentum back to Senegal.
However, Haaland restored Norway’s two-goal cushion almost immediately.
He side-footed a volley against the bar and into the net for his second of the match.
The forward has now scored in 12 consecutive competitive matches for Norway.
He has also recorded at least two goals in each of his last six appearances.
Sarr struck again in stoppage time to make it 3–2 and set up a tense finish.
The Crystal Palace winger nearly forced a dramatic equaliser but headed over late on.
Despite Senegal’s pressure, Norway remained in control for much of the contest.
The win guarantees Norway’s progression from Group I alongside France.
Senegal must now win their final group match against Iraq to stay in the tournament.
Haaland also came close to a hat-trick after hitting the post earlier in the game.
He had briefly dispossessed Edouard Mendy but failed to convert the chance.
His second-half goals ultimately secured Norway’s victory and qualification.
With more matches ahead, Haaland will have further chances to extend his scoring run.
