IGP Orders Clampdown on Police Social Media Use

The Inspector-General of Police, Nigeria Police Force, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has ordered a sweeping clampdown on unauthorised social media activities by police personnel.

He warned that strict disciplinary action will follow breaches of regulations.

In a statement posted on the Nigeria Police Force official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the IGP directed officers and men of the Force to immediately stop online activities capable of undermining professionalism, integrity, and public image.

He said the directive became necessary due to growing concerns over officers creating videos, hosting live sessions, and producing online content while in uniform or in identifiable service conditions without approval.

The IGP stated: “All officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force are hereby directed to desist forthwith from unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism and public image of the Force.”

He added that while social media remained a useful communication tool, its use by serving officers must strictly follow existing laws, regulations, and the Police Social Media Policy.

According to him, social media is a useful tool for engagement, but its use by serving officers must be guided by existing laws, regulations, and the Social Media Policy of the Nigeria Police Force.

The IGP prohibited officers from posting unauthorised content in uniform, commenting on official operations, revealing sensitive security information, or using their status for personal gain, entertainment, or commercial purposes.

He stated: “Personnel are prohibited from creating or disseminating unauthorised content in uniform, commenting on official police operations, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal gain or entertainment.”

To enforce compliance, he directed Commissioners of Police, departmental heads, and commanders to sensitise personnel and ensure immediate adherence across all formations nationwide.

He warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any lapses, saying: “All supervisory officers are to ensure immediate compliance within their formations. Failure to enforce this directive will attract appropriate accountability measures.”

The IGP also instructed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the X-Squad to intensify monitoring of social media platforms and sanction erring officers.

He said: “The Force Intelligence Department and the X-Squad are hereby directed to strengthen monitoring of social media platforms and ensure that erring personnel are promptly identified and disciplined.”

Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to discipline and professionalism, the police said the move aimed to protect public trust and strengthen institutional integrity.
