TCN Announces Planned Blackout in 5 States

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (Transmission Company of Nigeria) has announced a scheduled electricity outage affecting parts of Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Yobe States, as well as Gazaoua in the Niger Republic, following planned maintenance work on key transmission infrastructure.

In a statement issued on Saturday through its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the company explained that the disruption is linked to maintenance activities at the Kumbotos 330-kilovolt transmission substation scheduled for Sunday.

According to TCN, the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to upgrade critical components of the national grid, including the replacement of existing conductors and reinforcement of transmission capacity to improve stability and long-term power reliability.

The upgrade work would involve adjustments to 330kV bus II jumpers and the installation of higher-capacity 800mm² conductors, replacing older 350mm² lines.

Officials said the intervention is designed to strengthen the transmission network and reduce system failures across the affected regions.

As a result, distribution companies including Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, and Yola Electricity Distribution Company would be unable to receive bulk power supply during the maintenance window.

This would lead to temporary power outages across several areas served by the distribution companies, including parts of Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Azare in Bauchi State, Nguru in Yobe State, and even Gazaoua in Niger Republic.

TCN assured affected customers that the outage is temporary and necessary to enhance long-term electricity reliability and grid performance.

The company further emphasised that all works are part of a broader infrastructure upgrade programme aimed at improving national power delivery.
