NDC Warns of Attempts to Sideline Peter Obi

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (Nigeria Democratic Congress) has alleged that there are efforts by unnamed political actors to prevent its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from appearing on the ballot for the 2027 general elections.
The party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Enekweizu, made the claim during an interview on Friday, insisting that internal and external pressures were being mounted against the opposition figure due to fears of electoral defeat.
Enekweizu maintained that Nigerians would resist what he described as “tyranny,” arguing that attempts to exclude candidates from the ballot amount to an attack on democratic choice.
His remarks came against the backdrop of a Federal High Court ruling in Lokoja, which recently set aside an earlier judgment that had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (Independent National Electoral Commission) to register the NDC as a political party.
The court decision effectively nullified previous legal steps taken under the earlier ruling, restoring the status quo and raising fresh uncertainty around the party’s legal standing.
Justice Isah Dashen held that the earlier judgment had adversely affected the rights of another party, the Peace Movement Party, which was not joined in the original suit despite claims over ownership of the disputed party logo.
Despite the setback, the NDC insisted it remained committed to pursuing its legal battle and maintaining its political relevance ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party also argued that no valid order existed for its deregistration and vowed not to undergo a fresh hearing, setting the stage for further legal and political contestation.
Political observers said the development adds another layer of tension to Nigeria’s evolving 2027 election landscape, where legal disputes, party recognition battles, and candidate eligibility questions are increasingly shaping the pre-election climate.
