England Finish Top With Comfortable Panama Win

England wrapped up their Group L campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a composed 2-0 victory over Panama in New Jersey, securing top spot and maintaining their unbeaten record ahead of the knockout stages.
Despite making several changes to his starting lineup, England manager Thomas Tuchel watched his side produce another disciplined performance to finish the group phase in style.
The result ensured the Three Lions progressed to the Round of 32 as group winners, while Panama bowed out of the tournament after suffering a third consecutive defeat.
England dominated possession from the opening whistle but found it difficult to break down a well-organised Panamanian defence during a closely contested first half.
Panama defended in numbers, denying the Three Lions space in dangerous areas and frustrating their attempts to find an early breakthrough.
Although England controlled the tempo of the game, clear-cut chances were few and far between before halftime as Panama’s disciplined defensive approach forced Tuchel’s side to remain patient.
The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the hour mark from a familiar source.
A well-delivered corner into the penalty area found Jude Bellingham, who reacted quickest to flick the ball beyond the goalkeeper and hand England a deserved lead.
The goal immediately lifted England’s confidence, and they doubled their advantage just five minutes later.
This time, Bellingham turned provider, delivering a pinpoint cross that captain Harry Kane met with a powerful header, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and effectively putting the contest beyond Panama.
Panama attempted to respond and believed they had reduced the deficit after finding the back of the net, but their celebrations were cut short when the assistant referee’s flag went up for offside, a decision later upheld.
England continued to control proceedings but were forced to remain alert at the back as Panama pushed forward in the closing stages.
Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced an important late save to preserve his clean sheet and ensure England completed another solid defensive display.
Tuchel’s decision to rotate his squad by making five changes from the team that drew with Ghana proved successful, with the fresh faces contributing to another assured performance as England demonstrated both the depth and quality of their squad ahead of the knockout rounds.
The victory saw England finish at the summit of Group L, reinforcing their status as one of the favourites for the title as they prepare for the challenges of the knockout phase.
For Panama, the defeat marked the end of a disappointing campaign, with the Central Americans leaving the tournament without a point after losing all three of their group matches.
