DR Congo Make History With Comeback Victory

DR Congo produced a spirited second-half comeback to defeat Uzbekistan 3-1 and qualify for the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history, earning a Round-of-32 showdown against England in Atlanta.

Facing a must-deliver final Group K encounter, the Congolese displayed remarkable resilience after conceding an early goal, recovering to score three unanswered goals and secure the result they needed to extend their historic World Cup campaign.

Uzbekistan made the brighter start and capitalised on a costly defensive misunderstanding to take the lead.

Striker Eldor Shomurodov pounced after hesitation between defenders Axel Tuanzebe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka left the ball loose inside the penalty area.

Showing great composure, the experienced forward lifted his effort over the advancing goalkeeper to hand the Central Asians an early advantage.

Buoyed by the breakthrough, Uzbekistan controlled possession for much of the opening half and looked the more dangerous side, creating several promising attacks as they sought to strengthen their grip on the contest.

DR Congo, however, remained a threat on the counterattack despite struggling to dominate possession.

Their persistence almost paid off when they found the back of the net, only for the effort to be ruled out. Nathanael Mbuku also tested goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov with a powerful strike that was brilliantly pushed away.

The second half saw a transformed Congolese side emerge from the dressing room with greater intensity and attacking purpose.

Their pressure was rewarded when Yoane Wissa was brought down inside the penalty area by defender Abdukodir Khusanov, leaving the referee with little option but to point to the spot.

Wissa stepped up confidently and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, calmly converting the penalty to restore parity and breathe new life into his team’s qualification hopes.

The equaliser shifted the momentum completely in DR Congo’s favour as they continued to pile pressure on the Uzbek defence in search of a decisive second goal.

Their persistence paid off when Meschack Elia’s effort took a fortunate deflection inside the penalty area, allowing Fiston Mayele to react quickest and poke the loose ball beyond Nematov from close range to complete the dramatic turnaround.

With Uzbekistan committing more players forward in search of another equaliser, spaces began to open at the back.

Deep into stoppage time, DR Congo delivered the final blow as Wissa collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing a precise low shot into the far corner to seal a memorable 3-1 victory.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among the Congolese players, coaching staff and supporters as the nation secured qualification for the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

The historic victory sees DR Congo advance to the Round of 32, where they will face England in Atlanta on Wednesday in what promises to be one of the biggest matches in the country’s football history.
