Austria Snatch Late Draw, Reach Knockout Stage

Austria kept their FIFA World Cup dream alive after scoring a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to earn a thrilling 3-3 draw against Algeria in a pulsating Group J encounter that secured qualification for both sides.
The six-goal contest, played with knockout qualification at stake, produced relentless drama from start to finish as momentum swung repeatedly before Austria struck with virtually the final kick of the game to seal second place in the group behind Argentina.
Austria made a bright start and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half through veteran striker Marko Arnautovic.
The experienced forward calmly finished off a well-worked attacking move to put his side in control and raise hopes of automatic qualification.
Algeria refused to be rattled and gradually worked their way back into the contest.
Their persistence paid off just before halftime when defender Rafik Belghali found the equaliser, ensuring both teams headed into the break level at 1-1.
The second half resumed at a frantic pace, with Austria once again taking the initiative.
Midfielder Marcel Sabitzer restored his side’s advantage only minutes after the restart, finishing clinically to make it 2-1 and put Austria back on course for the knockout stage.
However, Algeria responded almost immediately.
Veteran captain Riyad Mahrez showcased his class by finishing a flowing attacking move to level the score at 2-2 with about 30 minutes remaining, setting up a tense finale.
As both teams searched desperately for the decisive goal, the match exploded into life in stoppage time.
In the 93rd minute, Mahrez struck again, calmly finding the back of the net to complete his brace and seemingly hand Algeria victory while pushing Austria towards elimination.
The goal also briefly opened the door for Iran, whose draw against Egypt earlier in the day had left them hoping Austria would lose in order to advance.
But Austria produced one final twist in an unforgettable contest. Deep into the sixth minute of added time, substitute Sasa Kalajdzic rose highest inside the penalty area to power home a dramatic header, sending the Austrian bench and supporters into wild celebrations as the scoreline finished 3-3.
The last-gasp equaliser proved decisive, ensuring Austria finished as runners-up in Group J behind Argentina, while Algeria progressed as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
The dramatic outcome ended Iran’s World Cup journey in heartbreaking fashion, with their hopes dashed on goal difference despite earning a valuable draw against Egypt.
Austria will now face Spain in the Round of 32 as they continue their quest for World Cup glory, while Algeria will battle Switzerland for a place in the last 16 after surviving one of the most dramatic group-stage finales of the tournament.
