Paraguay Stun Germany on Penalties to Reach Last 16

Paraguay national football team produced a major upset in the FIFA World Cup, eliminating Germany national football team 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to secure a place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup.

The four-time champions dominated possession with 78 per cent compared to Paraguay’s 22 per cent but were repeatedly frustrated by a disciplined defensive setup that limited clear chances despite sustained pressure.

Paraguay broke the deadlock in the 42nd minute through Julio Enciso, who powered a header home after a well-worked move initiated from a corner and involving Miguel Almirón and Matías Galarza.

Germany responded in the 53rd minute when Kai Havertz finished off a precise assist from Florian Wirtz, restoring parity after breaking through Paraguay’s compact defensive line.

Both sides pushed for a winner through regulation and extra time, but neither could find a decisive goal, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Germany missed key attempts from Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade, and Jonathan Tah, while Paraguay held their nerve as José Canale converted the decisive penalty to seal a 4-3 victory.

Paraguay now advance to face France national football team in the Round of 16, marking a significant milestone in what has become a standout tournament run for the South American side.
