Morocco defeat Canada, reach World Cup quarter-finals

Morocco produced a dominant second-half display to defeat Canada 3-0 and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending the dreams of the tournament co-hosts in Houston on Saturday.
The Atlas Lions, who reached the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup, overcame a difficult opening 45 minutes before shifting into top gear after the break to book their place among the tournament’s final eight.
Canada enjoyed the brighter start and looked more threatening in the first half, creating several opportunities and forcing Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into an early save.
However, the North Americans were unable to convert their dominance into goals despite controlling large spells of the opening period.
Morocco suffered an early setback when influential midfielder Ismael Saibari was forced off through injury, but his replacement, Soufiane Rahimi, would later make a decisive impact.
The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half when captain Achraf Hakimi delivered a well-worked free-kick to Azzedine Ounahi, who calmly fired home to give Morocco the lead.
The goal transformed the African side, who grew in confidence and began to dictate the pace of the game.
As Canada pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Morocco capitalised on the spaces left behind.
Ounahi struck again in the 82nd minute with a composed finish to complete his brace and effectively end Canada’s hopes of a comeback.
Deep into stoppage time, substitute Rahimi added a third goal to seal an emphatic victory and complete a clinical second-half performance.
The defeat brought Canada’s historic World Cup journey to an end.
The co-hosts had reached the knockout stage for the first time after recording their maiden World Cup victory and progressing beyond the group stage, but they were unable to match Morocco’s experience when it mattered most.
Morocco will now shift attention to a quarter-final showdown against either France or Paraguay as they continue their quest for another memorable World Cup campaign.
The Atlas Lions remain Africa’s strongest hope of lifting the trophy after another impressive display on the global stage.
