Nigeria’s women’s tennis team has achieved a historic milestone after securing promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II following a thrilling 2-1 victory over hosts Botswana in the promotional play-off in Gaborone.
The Nigerian team made a strong start to the decisive tie, with in-form Success Ogunjobi defeating Botswana’s Chelsea Chakanyuka 6-2, 6-4 in the opening singles match to give Nigeria an early advantage.
The squad comprising Etoro Bassey, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed, and Oyinlomo Quadre, under the guidance of coach Rotimi Akinloye, showed determination and composure to complete the victory and secure promotion to the higher division.
The historic achievement marks another significant chapter in Nigerian tennis, coming months after the country’s men’s team earned promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II.
With both the men’s and women’s teams achieving promotion in the same year, Nigeria has recorded one of its most remarkable performances on the international tennis stage.
