Members of the Delta State House of Assembly have embarked on a six-week annual recess, with Speaker Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor urging lawmakers to use the break to strengthen ties with their constituents and improve their legislative capacity.
The decision to proceed on the recess was approved during Tuesday’s plenary after the House Leader, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, moved the motion, which was seconded by Hon. Pereotu Oloye, representing Burutu II Constituency.
The proposal received unanimous support from members before the Speaker officially adjourned the Assembly.
Addressing lawmakers before the close of the session, Guwor applauded members for their dedication, discipline and commitment throughout the legislative year.
He encouraged them to make the most of the recess by participating in scheduled training programmes aimed at enhancing their knowledge and effectiveness in lawmaking.
The speaker also stressed the importance of staying connected with the people they represent, urging members to engage directly with their constituents, explain government policies and programmes, and return with feedback, concerns and expectations that would guide future legislative actions.
He extended appreciation to the management and staff of the Delta State House of Assembly for their professionalism and unwavering support, describing their contributions as vital to the smooth functioning of the legislature.
Guwor equally commended media practitioners for their consistent and responsible coverage of the Assembly’s activities, including plenary sessions, committee work and oversight functions.
He encouraged journalists to sustain their partnership with the legislature in promoting transparency and keeping the public informed.
The speaker also acknowledged the contributions of other stakeholders whose support has aided the passage of people-centred bills and motions, while wishing all members safe travels during the recess.
The Delta State House of Assembly is scheduled to reconvene for plenary on September 1, 2026.
