President Bola Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti and other eminent Nigerians have called for renewed commitment to national unity, patriotism and selfless leadership as Abia State commemorated the 60th memorial anniversary of Nigeria’s first Military Head of State, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi.
The leaders made the call on Thursday in Umuahia during a memorial ceremony held in honour of the late military leader, who was assassinated on July 29, 1966.
They urged Nigerians to reflect on the lessons of history and work towards building a more united, peaceful and prosperous nation.
Represented by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), President Tinubu described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a courageous and disciplined officer who assumed leadership at a difficult period in Nigeria’s history.
Tinubu said that despite his brief tenure, the late Head of State demonstrated commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability and protecting the country’s integrity.
He highlighted the values of patriotism, discipline, integrity and sacrifice associated with Aguiyi-Ironsi, urging Nigerians to see the nation’s diversity as a strength rather than a source of division.
The President also commended Governor Otti for what he described as visionary leadership and quality governance in Abia State.
Governor Alex Otti said the memorial was not only about honouring a fallen leader but also about reminding Nigerians of the importance of unity, competence and sacrifice in nation-building.
He said Aguiyi-Ironsi’s willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice for Nigeria should inspire leaders to put national interest above personal and ethnic considerations.
Otti stressed that his administration prioritises competence and integrity over ethnic or regional considerations in appointments.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Chief of Army Staff General Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), and former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriotic Nigerian whose contribution to national unity should remain a source of inspiration.
They commended the Abia State Government for preserving the memory of the late leader and encouraged Nigerians to continue promoting peace, unity and responsible leadership.
Presenting the citation of her father, Mrs Louisa Aguiyi-Ironsi said the commemoration was aimed at preserving his legacy and honouring his sacrifice for Nigeria, rather than reopening old divisions.
She urged current and future leaders to uphold justice, accountability, discipline and the collective interest of the nation.
The ceremony featured prayers, the consecration of Aguiyi-Ironsi’s tomb by the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, Most Rev. Michael Ukpong, and a wreath-laying ceremony led by President Tinubu’s representative, Governor Otti, state representatives and other dignitaries.
The event was attended by government officials, military officers, traditional rulers, religious leaders, members of the diplomatic community and members of the Aguiyi-Ironsi family.
