The Independent National Electoral Commission has begun restoring three previously suppressed Delta State House of Assembly constituencies, marking a major step toward improving democratic representation and complying with constitutional requirements.
The constituencies slated for restoration are Isoko North Constituency II, Abraka Constituency in Ethiope East Local Government Area, and Ughelli South Constituency II, following legal and constitutional directives.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting in Asaba, Delta Resident Electoral Commissioner Sir Etekamba Udo Umoren described the restoration exercise as a constitutional responsibility that would strengthen representative democracy across affected communities.
He explained the engagement reflected INEC’s determination to deliver inclusive governance while ensuring communities regain their rightful voice in the Delta State House of Assembly through fair political representation.
Umoren praised traditional rulers, elected officials, security agencies, civil society groups, youth organisations, women associations, media practitioners and community leaders for supporting the exercise despite receiving short notice.
According to the REC, restoring the constituencies is more than an administrative task, as it guarantees affected residents equal representation and reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to justice, fairness and democratic governance.
He assured residents the exercise would improve legislative representation, enabling elected lawmakers to respond more effectively to local concerns while addressing the needs and aspirations of their constituents.
Umoren urged stakeholders to cooperate with INEC’s technical team by providing accurate information, encouraging grassroots participation and maintaining constructive engagement throughout the restoration process for credible outcomes.
He appealed to traditional rulers and local government chairmen to mobilise residents peacefully, while calling on security agencies to safeguard public confidence and maintain order during implementation.
Representing the Supervising National Commissioner, Deputy Director of Delineation Mrs Emem Umoren described the restoration initiative as a landmark effort that promotes equal representation and strengthens Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
She encouraged stakeholders to embrace fairness, unity and inclusiveness, stressing that every community deserves a meaningful voice in governance and equal access to the dividends of democracy.
