President Bola Tinubu has praised Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing the athletes’ efforts as a reflection of courage, dedication, and national pride.
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Tuesday the President commended athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, and administrators who contributed to Nigeria’s success at the competition.
Tinubu said the Nigerian contingent represented the country with “honour, dignity, and pride,” noting that their achievements demonstrated the value of hard work and perseverance.
“Whether on the podium or through courageous performances in the competition, every member of Team Nigeria has represented our nation with honour, dignity, and pride.”
Team Nigeria secured 24 medals at the Games, comprising 10 gold, 7 silver, and 7 bronze medals. The performance placed the country seventh on the overall medal table and made Nigeria the highest-ranked African nation at the event.
The President described the result as one of Nigeria’s strongest outings in Commonwealth Games history, saying the athletes’ accomplishments would inspire younger generations to pursue excellence in sports.
Tinubu also pledged that his administration would increase investment in sports development by improving facilities, strengthening sporting institutions, and creating more opportunities for athletes to compete at global levels.
“My administration remains steadfast in its resolve to invest in sports development, strengthen our sporting institutions, improve training facilities, and create greater opportunities for our talented athletes to excel on the continental and global stage.”
He praised the efforts of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for supporting athletes and advancing sports development in the country.
The President urged Team Nigeria’s athletes to remain focus yvgviyg ed, saying the experience gained from the Commonwealth Games would provide a foundation for even greater achievements in future international competitions.
