Bill for Agricultural Institute, Delta scales 2nd reading in Reps

A Bill for an Act to establish the Agricultural and Energy Technical Institute, Aboh, Delta has passed second reading in the House of Representatives.

This followed the presentation of the general principles of the bill by the sponsor, Rep. Nnamdi Ezechi (PDP-Delta), at Tuesday’s plenary.

Presenting the bill, Ezechi said that it sought to amend the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act of the Federation, 2004, to pave the way for the establishment of the Agricultural and Energy Technical Institute in Aboh, Delta.

He said the importance of agriculture in the quest for sustainable development and economic prosperity cannot be over emphasised.

“Agriculture is the backbone of our nation, providing food security, employment opportunities, and a significant contribution to our GDP.

“To fully harness the potential of our agricultural sector, there is an urgent need for innovative approaches, modern techniques, and specialised trainings,” he said.

He stated that the establishment of the Institute would be a crucial step in such direction.

“By integrating agricultural and energy studies, this institute will not only equip our youth with the necessary skills and knowledge but also bridge the gap between traditional farming methods and modern technologies.”

The bill was unanimously adopted following a voice vote and the Speaker, Rep Tajudeen Abbas who presided over the plenary ruled in favour of the bill scaling through the second reading.

The bill was later referred to the House Committee on Agriculture Colleges and Institutions for further legislative actions.
