Peter Obi never misused LP funds, says ex-treasurer

A former National Treasurer of the Labour Party, Oluchi Oparah,  has denied allegations that Peter Obi misused party funds during his 2023 presidential campaign.
Oparah made the clarification on Thursday on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief programme.
When asked to react to the allegation by a chieftain of the LP, Abayomi Arabambi, that Obi spent party funds on his campaign, she said Obi funded his campaign activities without using party funds.
According to Oparah, Obi personally financed his campaign activities and even contributed financially to the party.
She said Obi contributed financially to the Labour Party, helping stabilize its finances, adding that befor Obi joined the party, the Labour Party was heavily indebted and unable to pay staff salaries.
She also said that each candidate operates their own campaign account, separate from the party’s official accounts.
Oparah expressed surprise at the allegations, saying ,”there was nothing of such. Mr. Obi never spent any money meant for the party.
”Obi “lifted the party from zero level to where it is today” through his financial contributions and support.
Oparah challenged those accusing Obi of financial misconduct to provide evidence of payments made to the Labour Party.
“Anyone claiming whatsoever should come out to show us the particular account to which they paid whatever thing they say they paid to the Labour Party,” she maintained .
Oparah praised Obi’s charitable nature, describing his philanthropic activities as a consistent trait.
“Anyone that knows Mr. Obi very well knows that his act of charity is five and six, like the air he breathes,” she added.
