Police council confirms Disu as IGP

The Nigeria Police Council on Monday unanimously endorsed the appointment of Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police, clearing the path for his formal swearing-in later this week.

A statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said President Bola Tinubu would administer the oath of office on Wednesday during a scheduled meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.

The council session, held at the State House, was presided over by the President and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors and senior government officials, in line with constitutional provisions guiding the appointment of a police chief.

Among those present were the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Didi Walson-Jack, was also in attendance.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State praised Disu’s record, particularly his leadership of the Rapid Response Squad between 2015 and 2021.

He credited the officer’s tenure with strengthening crime control operations and earning commendations for operational excellence.

Similarly, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State described the appointment as merit-based, pointing to Disu’s professional track record.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing the nomination.

Wike also commended the new police chief for his performance during his deployment to the Federal Capital Territory, noting his contributions to improving security coordination.

Disu was first appointed in an acting capacity on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

He took over at a brief handover ceremony at the Louis Edet House, headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.

Before his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos.

Over a career spanning more than three decades since his enlistment in 1992, he has held key operational roles across Ogun, Ondo, Rivers and the Federal Capital Territory.

He previously headed the Intelligence Response Team and commanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in multiple states.

Disu also served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State before his redeployment to Abuja.

A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the 59-year-old officer has pledged to prioritise professionalism, modernisation and accountability in the force.

“My tenure will focus on professionalism, modernism and accountability,” Disu said during his handover address, promising reforms aimed at strengthening public trust and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
