PSG eliminate Liverpool with Anfield victory

Paris Saint-Germain have progressed to the next round of the UEFA Champions League after defeating Liverpool at Anfield to complete a comprehensive aggregate win following their 2–0 advantage from the first leg in Paris.

The French champions sealed their qualification through a standout performance from Ousmane Dembélé, who scored twice to silence the Anfield crowd and end Liverpool’s hopes of a comeback.

Liverpool, buoyed by a passionate home atmosphere and a more improved display compared to their first-leg performance, were unable to overturn the deficit.

Despite sustained pressure in phases of the match, Arne Slot’s side lacked the sharpness in attack needed to break down the PSG defence.

PSG carried the greater threat early on, with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili making important saves to deny Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Dembélé.

The French forward also wasted a clear one-on-one opportunity in a dominant first-half showing from the visitors.

Liverpool’s best defensive moment came through Marquinhos, who produced a crucial intervention to prevent a promising opening for the hosts.

Slot made notable selection changes, handing Alexander Isak his first start since December and initially leaving Mohamed Salah on the bench.

However, Salah was introduced early after Hugo Ekitike went off injured.

The hosts briefly believed they had been handed a lifeline when Alexis Mac Allister won a penalty in the 65th minute, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review by referee Maurizio Mariani.

PSG struck decisively seven minutes later. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia set up Dembélé, who unleashed a precise long-range effort to put the tie beyond Liverpool’s reach.

He later added a second goal in stoppage time, finishing off a pass from Bradley Barcola to complete the victory.

The result confirms PSG’s progression to the next stage, while Liverpool exit the competition and are left without silverware this season, raising further questions about their qualification prospects for next year’s Champions League.
