Shekarau dumps PDP for APC in Kano

Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Shekarau announced the decision on Sunday at his residence in Kano, following weeks of consultations with political associates and supporters.
Speaking at the gathering, which was attended by loyalists and party members including Senator Bello Gwarzo, the former governor said the move came after careful evaluation of the available political options.
He sought the views of those present on the decision and received unanimous backing, signalling broad support among his political base.
Shekarau served as governor of Kano State from 2003 to 2011 and later held office as Minister of Education between 2014 and 2015.
Meanwhile, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf welcomed Shekarau’s defection to the APC, describing it as a significant boost for the party in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor said the development would strengthen the party’s position and influence in Kano.
He added that arrangements were underway, in collaboration with the party’s national leadership, to fix a date for Shekarau’s formal reception into the APC.
According to the governor, the party continues to gain momentum in the state, positioning itself as a dominant political force ahead of future elections.
Yusuf expressed confidence that the APC would secure victory in upcoming polls, citing unity and strategic alliances as key drivers of its growing strength.
