INEC dismisses alleged Amupitan X account

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, operates a social media account on X, describing the allegation as a clear instance of digital impersonation.
In a statement released on Monday, the electoral body said findings from an extensive forensic investigation indicate that the account in question is not linked to Amupitan.
The commission emphasised that the controversial post attributed to its chairman did not originate from him and should be regarded as misleading.
According to INEC, the investigation relied on multiple layers of digital verification.
“The probe deployed X platform data, internet archive records, identity forensics, and cross-platform analysis,” the statement noted, outlining the technical depth used to reach its conclusion.
The commission maintained that the results firmly point to impersonation, reinforcing its stance that the chairman has no involvement with the account or any partisan commentary allegedly made through it.
INEC further cautioned the public against spreading unverified information, stressing the growing risk of identity manipulation in the digital space.
