Fubara moves to reduce excessive use of security personnel for VIP protection

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced plans to reform how security personnel are deployed for the protection of top government officials, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
Fubara disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection of an ongoing residential project for commissioners and special advisers in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
He explained that the initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure better utilisation of security personnel while also cutting down unnecessary costs associated with VIP protection.
According to the governor, the new housing project which consists of 25 units of six-bedroom duplexes—was designed after the government observed that many senior officials did not have official residences.
This situation, he said, had forced the state to spend heavily on rented accommodations, which he described as inefficient and embarrassing.
Fubara noted that bringing senior officials together in a central residential area would improve coordination, boost productivity, and simplify security arrangements through a unified protection structure.
He also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project, commending the contractor for adhering to the timeline.
The facility is expected to be completed and commissioned by November 2026.
The governor added that the project would serve as a lasting example of his administration’s commitment to good governance and more efficient public service delivery.
