Saka sends Arsenal into first final in 20 years

Arsenal booked a place in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in two decades after a narrow 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid, with Bukayo Saka emerging as the decisive figure on Tuesday night.

In a tense semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium, Mikel Arteta’s side capitalised on Saka’s first-half strike to secure a 2-1 aggregate win, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Madrid.

The breakthrough came just before half-time when Saka reacted quickest inside the box, finishing from close range after a save from Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

The goal proved enough to send the North London club into the final.

Arsenal will now face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final scheduled for May 30 in Budapest. PSG currently hold a slim advantage ahead of their second-leg clash in Germany.

The result marks Arsenal’s first appearance in the competition’s final since 2006, when they were defeated 2-1 by Barcelona.

Despite their rich history, the club has never won the Champions League, with their only major European honours dating back to the 1994 Cup Winners’ Cup and the 1970 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Tuesday’s victory was seen as a moment of redemption for the Gunners, who have endured criticism in recent seasons over their inability to secure major trophies.

Their last European final ended in disappointment, a 4-1 loss to Chelsea in the 2019 Europa League.

Now, under the guidance of manager Mikel Arteta, Arsenal are enjoying what could become one of the most successful campaigns in the club’s history.

In addition to their European run, they remain on course for a Premier League title, raising the prospect of a historic double.

The current squad is increasingly being compared to the legendary “Invincibles” team led by Arsene Wenger, who guided the club to an unbeaten league title in 2004.

The atmosphere at the Emirates Stadium reflected the magnitude of the occasion, with thousands of fans creating a vibrant pre-match scene.

Their support carried into the game as Arsenal weathered early pressure from Atletico, including chances for Julian Alvarez and Giuliano Simeone.

After taking the lead, Arsenal maintained defensive discipline in the second half.

Gabriel Magalhaes produced a crucial last-ditch tackle to deny a clear opportunity, while goalkeeper David Raya made an important save from Antoine Griezmann.

On the touchline, Arteta celebrated passionately at full-time as the stadium erupted, marking a milestone moment in his managerial tenure.

The Spaniard had previously spoken about his belief in leading Arsenal to European glory, even during challenging periods early in his reign.

With just one match now separating them from Champions League success, Arsenal head into the final with renewed confidence and the chance to make history.
