Aisha Yesufu dumps ADC for NDC

Activist Aisha Yesufu has resigned from the African Democratic Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where she has also declared her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat.
Yesufu announced her defection in a statement posted on her X account on Wednesday evening, describing the move as part of her commitment to supporting a political movement she believes represents hope for Nigerians.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.
The activist explained that her political decisions have consistently been guided by loyalty to the ideals she believes in and her commitment to supporting Obi’s leadership vision.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise, I am joining the NDC,” she stated.
Yesufu also confirmed that she would be contesting for the FCT senatorial seat under the NDC platform.
“This time, I am joining the NDC not just as a member but also as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she added.
She noted that before leaving the ADC, she ensured all her responsibilities within the party were properly concluded to guarantee what she described as a smooth and clean transition.
“I have tidied up all my obligations to the ADC, ensuring a clean transition. I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country,” she said.
The activist expressed appreciation to members of the ADC, revealing that she had served the party in several leadership capacities, including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at different levels.
“The experience has been invaluable, and I thank everyone for their support and cooperation,” she added.
Her defection comes amid growing political realignments within opposition circles ahead of the 2027 elections.
The move followed the recent decision by Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to also join the NDC after leaving their previous political alliances.
Both politicians reportedly cited persistent internal crises, legal disputes, and prolonged leadership battles within the ADC as reasons for their exit from the party.
