CNN founder Ted Turner dies at 87

American media pioneer Ted Turner has died at the age of 87, according to reports confirmed by CNN.

Turner, widely regarded as the man who revolutionised global television news, passed away after battling Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder.

A flamboyant entrepreneur, Turner built a vast media and business empire that reshaped modern broadcasting and helped define the era of 24-hour news coverage.

He founded CNN in 1980, introducing the world’s first round-the-clock news channel and changing how breaking news was delivered globally.

The network rose to international prominence during its coverage of the Gulf War in 1990–1991, when its live reporting from conflict zones set new standards for television journalism.

CNN also became known for its in-depth reporting on major global events, including the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in China.

Turner’s decision to keep reporters on the ground during the U.S. bombing of Baghdad further cemented the network’s reputation for frontline journalism.

CNN Worldwide chairman and CEO Mark Thompson paid tribute to the media mogul, describing him as a foundational figure in modern journalism.

“Ted is the giant on whose shoulders we stand, and we will all take a moment today to recognise him and his impact on our lives and the world,” Thompson said.

“He was and always will be the presiding spirit of CNN.”

Born Robert Edward Turner III in Cincinnati, Ohio, in November 1938, Turner attended military school in Tennessee and later enrolled at Brown University, though he did not complete his studies.

He later took control of his family’s struggling advertising business after the death of his father, who died by suicide following financial difficulties.

Turner entered broadcasting after acquiring several radio stations, eventually purchasing a struggling television station in Atlanta in 1970.

That station became the foundation for the Turner Broadcasting System, which he later expanded into a national media network.

The success of his broadcasting ventures provided the financial base for the creation of CNN, which became the first 24-hour television news network in the United States.

Turner’s innovations in cable news inspired the creation of other global news outlets, including Fox News, MSNBC, and numerous international channels that adopted the continuous news model.

Beyond news, his media empire expanded into entertainment and sports broadcasting, including networks such as TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network, and Turner Classic Movies.

Turner also became known for his philanthropic efforts and environmental advocacy, particularly through initiatives linked to global development and conservation.

His death marks the end of a significant era in modern media history, defined by the rise of 24-hour news and global live reporting.
