Bala Mohammed enters Senate contest

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi has declared his intention to contest for the Bauchi South Senatorial seat under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Bauchi State governor obtained his nomination form on Thursday in Abuja shortly after participating in his first National Executive Committee meeting of the party.

The meeting was chaired by APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.

Addressing party members during the gathering, Mohammed criticised what he described as growing political intimidation and undemocratic practices within Nigeria’s political environment.

According to him, such developments have made it increasingly difficult for progressive politicians and movements to survive.

He explained that his decision to align with the APM was influenced by what he called the party’s commitment to good governance, justice, inclusiveness, internal democracy, and adherence to the rule of law.

The governor said the principles of the party closely reflect his own political beliefs and vision for governance.

Mohammed also disclosed that several notable figures from the Peoples Democratic Party moved with him into the APM.

He listed members of the National Assembly, lawmakers from the Bauchi State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, commissioners, ward executives, party officials, and grassroots supporters among those who joined the political movement.

According to him, the development should not be viewed as an ordinary defection but as a broad political realignment intended to strengthen the APM and expand its national influence ahead of future elections.

His Senate ambition comes only days after he officially left the PDP, where he previously served as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum.

Mohammed said his exit from the party was driven by the need to secure stronger political representation for his constituents and supporters.

The governor is no stranger to the National Assembly, having previously represented Bauchi South Senatorial District in 2007 under the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party.

Following his time in the Senate, he was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in 2010 before later joining the PDP, where he eventually emerged as governor of Bauchi State.
