Fubara urges corps members on election integrity

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has called on National Youth Service Corps members deployed to the state to uphold integrity, credibility, and professionalism as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the 2026 Batch A Stream II orientation course held at the NYSC permanent orientation camp in Nonwa-Gbam, Tai Local Government Area, the governor emphasised the importance of discipline and moral uprightness in electoral duties.

He was represented at the event by the Director of Administration in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Rachel Ayasuk-Dandy.

Fubara urged the corps members to carry out their responsibilities as ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission with “good conscience and fearless moral uprightness,” stressing that their conduct would be crucial to public confidence in the electoral process.

He also encouraged them to integrate fully into their host communities, embrace local values, and contribute meaningfully to their environment.

According to him, such engagement would make them more effective and impactful during their service year.

The governor also assured the corps members of government support, particularly in the areas of welfare and security.

He described them as potential “beacon of hope to the people and good ambassadors of the NYSC Scheme,” urging them to maintain discipline throughout their service period.

In his remarks, the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps in Rivers State, Mr. Moses Oleghe, commended the corps members for their commitment, describing their participation in camp activities as evidence of “patriotic spirit, resilience, and enthusiasm.”

He advised them to use the service year as an opportunity for self-discovery and skill acquisition, rather than relying solely on white-collar job expectations.

Oleghe encouraged them to acquire practical skills that would make them self-reliant.

The coordinator also appreciated the state government for its support, including the provision of 1,500 mattresses for corps members and plans for the construction of new 1,000-capacity hostels for both male and female participants, following increased deployment to the state.

Officials disclosed that 3,596 corps members comprising 1,297 males and 2,299 females successfully completed the three-week orientation programme.

The event concluded with renewed assurances from both government and NYSC authorities on strengthening corps welfare and ensuring their effective participation in national development activities, including electoral processes
