Mimiko defects from PDP to APC

Former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a major political shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mimiko, who governed Ondo State between 2009 and 2017, had earlier resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in April before confirming his defection to the ruling party.

The former governor announced his decision on Thursday at the APC Ward 7 Secretariat in Ondo West Local Government Area of Ondo State, where party members and supporters gathered to receive him.

Explaining his move, Mimiko said the decision was driven by his desire to contribute more actively to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development, as well as to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

He acknowledged the current economic challenges facing the country but expressed confidence that ongoing policies and programmes under the Tinubu administration were laying what he described as a solid foundation for long-term national progress.

Welcoming him into the party, the Ondo State APC Chairman, Kolawole Babatunde, described Mimiko’s defection as a significant boost for the party’s strength and political prospects in the state.

Babatunde praised the former governor’s leadership experience and his contributions to governance in Ondo State and the country, noting that the party leadership and the state governor were pleased with his decision to join the APC.

Mimiko’s defection adds to the growing political realignments in the country as parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
