Diri praises APC unity after Reps primary

Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa has commended what he described as growing unity and cohesion within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, following the party’s House of Representatives primary election held in his Sampou/Kalama Ward 6, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area.

Speaking on Saturday shortly after the exercise, the governor said the APC in Bayelsa had succeeded in building internal harmony, adding that such unity was essential for political stability and electoral success.

Diri noted that the consensus-driven process witnessed in the ward reflected a broader pattern across the state’s federal constituencies, where party leaders had reportedly worked to minimise internal conflict and promote collective decision-making ahead of the general elections.

He explained that the peaceful conduct of the primary was evidence of deliberate efforts by the party leadership to maintain cohesion and avoid factional disputes that often weaken political structures.

During the exercise, incumbent House of Representatives member for Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, Hon. Oforji Oboku, received overwhelming endorsement from party members in the ward.

A total of 2,565 APC members were said to have supported his second-term aspiration.

Governor Diri himself was present at the event, which was described as a show of solidarity and political alignment within the ward.

According to the governor, the outcome represented a clear expression of confidence in Oboku’s performance and legislative representation, stressing that the level of support demonstrated strong approval of his leadership.

Officials overseeing the process confirmed that out of 3,411 registered party members in the ward, 2,565 participated in the exercise, leading to Oboku’s unanimous endorsement.

The APC returning officer for the ward subsequently declared him the party’s flag bearer for the federal constituency.
