PDP denies blocking presidential aspirants

The Peoples Democratic Party faction led by Kabiru Turaki has denied allegations that presidential aspirants are being prevented from obtaining nomination forms ahead of the party’s presidential primary election.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the faction’s spokesman, Ini Ememobong, described the claims as false, misleading and without foundation.

Ememobong stated that the party had not directed any official to obstruct interested aspirants from participating in the nomination process, insisting that the Interim National Working Committee was unaware of any such action.

According to him, the party recently reviewed and extended its timetable following appeals from members who requested additional time to complete the nomination process.

Under the revised schedule, the deadline for the purchase and submission of completed nomination forms has been fixed for Friday, May 22, 2026, while a special screening exercise for aspirants yet to undergo screening will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2026.

The faction further clarified that although the PDP had zoned its presidential ticket to the southern region, the party could not constitutionally stop any Nigerian from contesting for elective office.

Ememobong therefore urged the public and party members to disregard reports suggesting that aspirants were being denied access to nomination forms.

He reaffirmed that nomination forms remain available within the stipulated timeframe in the amended timetable and maintained that all eligible Nigerians interested in contesting on the party’s platform are free to obtain, complete and submit the required documents.

The clarification comes amid heightened political activities and internal consultations within opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The PDP faction’s statement is also expected to address growing concerns among party supporters over transparency and inclusiveness in the build-up to the presidential primary process.
