FG announces Eid-ul-Adha public holidays

The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays for the celebration of Eid-ul-Adha across the country.

The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.

According to the statement, the decision underscores the government’s recognition of the importance of the Islamic festival and its spiritual value to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.

“The Federal Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has declared Wednesday, 27th May and Thursday, 28th May, 2026 as public holidays to mark the celebration of Eid ul Adha,” the statement partly read.

The minister congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the occasion, describing Eid-ul-Adha as a celebration that reflects sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion towards humanity.

He also urged Nigerians to take advantage of the holiday period to pray for the nation and support efforts aimed at strengthening peace, security, and economic prosperity.

“The Federal Government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,” the statement added.

The government further called on citizens to embrace unity, brotherhood, and mutual understanding during the festive season while wishing Muslims a peaceful and joyful celebration.

Eid-ul-Adha, widely known as Eid-el-Kabir or the Festival of Sacrifice, remains one of the most important religious celebrations observed by Muslims globally.

Meanwhile, movement of travellers has increased in several parts of the country, including Lagos, ahead of the holiday celebrations.

In preparation for the expected surge in traffic, the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kwara said it had deployed 950 personnel made up of officers, marshals, special marshals, and first responders across the state.

The command disclosed that 16 patrol vehicles, four ambulances, and a 70-tonne tow truck had been stationed at strategic points to aid traffic control and emergency operations throughout the festive period.

Motorists were also advised to obey traffic regulations, as the agency warned against speeding, dangerous driving, wrongful overtaking, overloading, use of mobile phones while driving, tyre violations, lane indiscipline, and failure to use seatbelts.
