Super Eagles to face Poland, Portugal without Osimhen, Lookman

Nigeria’s preparations for two high-profile international friendlies have suffered a significant setback after head coach Eric Chelle confirmed that Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman will miss the matches against Poland and Portugal.
The absence of the two forwards deprives the Super Eagles of some of their most experienced and influential attacking players as the team continues its rebuilding process under Chelle.
Speaking ahead of the European tour, the coach explained that Osimhen had been excused from the squad due to uncertainties surrounding his club future and concerns about his fitness during a potentially decisive period in his career.
“Victor Osimhen may have to change clubs, so I prefer that he stays where he is because if you play and you are not at 100 per cent, it is not good,” Chelle said.
The striker, who recently enjoyed a successful spell with Galatasaray, has been linked with several major European clubs in recent months, fueling speculation about a possible transfer move during the summer window.
Nigeria will also be without Ademola Lookman, one of the country’s standout performers in recent seasons.
According to Chelle, the forward has been released from international duty after a physically demanding campaign in Europe.
“Lookman is very tired, and Atalanta has asked us to release him,” the coach stated.
Lookman has been a vital figure for both club and country, and his absence removes another major attacking threat from the Nigerian squad.
The winger enjoyed another productive season in Europe, helping his club reach the latter stages of continental competition while maintaining his reputation as one of Africa’s most exciting attacking talents.
Additional Challenges For Super Eagles
Beyond the absence of Osimhen and Lookman, the national team has also been forced to contend with administrative complications.
Chelle disclosed that visa-related issues have affected some players ahead of the trip, creating further challenges for his plans.
Despite the setbacks, however, the coach insisted that the team remains determined to make a strong impression against two of Europe’s established football nations.
“We will go there to fight. If we win, we win. If we lose, we lose. But if we lose, they will have to work for it.
”They will have to beat us to win those games,” he said.
The upcoming fixtures are expected to provide a stern examination for the Super Eagles.
Chelle spoke highly of both opponents, noting that Poland and Portugal possess the quality to challenge any team in world football.
“Poland is a good team. They are going to the World Cup. Portugal may be the best team in the world. So this is a great challenge for us,” he said.
The matches are expected to offer valuable insight into Nigeria’s progress as the coaching crew continues to shape the squad for future competitions.
The friendlies come at a crucial period for Nigerian football following the disappointment of failing to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup.
Chelle admitted that missing out on the tournament remains painful but suggested the setback could ultimately become a source of motivation for the team.
“I am sad that we did not go to the World Cup, but maybe this challenge will be something very good for me and for the team,” he said.
With two demanding encounters on the horizon, the Super Eagles will seek to demonstrate resilience and competitiveness despite the absence of key players.
For Chelle, the matches against Poland and Portugal represent more than just friendly fixtures.
They are an opportunity to test new combinations, assess squad depth, and build a team capable of returning Nigeria to the highest level of international football.
While supporters will undoubtedly miss seeing Osimhen and Lookman in action, attention will now shift to the players selected to step up and seize their opportunity on the European stage.
