Tinubu hosts Benin president in Lagos

President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted the newly inaugurated President of Benin Republic, Romuald Wadagni, at his private residence in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Wadagni arrived in Lagos earlier in the day and was received at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu before proceeding to meet the Nigerian leader for a closed-door engagement.

The meeting between both presidents was held behind closed doors and lasted about 30 minutes, with discussions not disclosed to the press.

Wadagni’s visit comes less than a week after he was sworn in as President of Benin Republic, following his victory in the country’s April 12, 2026 presidential election.

He officially assumed office on May 24, 2026, succeeding former President Patrice Talon.

President Tinubu had earlier delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent Nigeria at Wadagni’s inauguration ceremony, signaling the importance Nigeria places on its diplomatic relationship with Benin.

Benin Republic shares a long border with Nigeria and remains one of the country’s closest regional partners in West Africa, particularly in the areas of trade, border security, and broader economic cooperation within the sub-region.

The visit is expected to further deepen bilateral ties between both countries and strengthen ongoing collaboration on regional security and economic integration efforts in West Africa.
