Nigeria’s Jimoh Ibrahim elected chair of UN General Assembly Fifth Committee

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, has been elected Chairman of the Fifth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, placing Nigeria in charge of a major UN body responsible for administrative and budgetary affairs.

The Fifth Committee is one of the most influential committees of the General Assembly, overseeing the United Nations’ finances, administrative operations, and resource distribution across its global system.

Ibrahim’s election gives Nigeria a prominent leadership position within the UN framework at a time when the organisation is grappling with financial pressures and calls for institutional reforms.

In his acceptance speech, the Nigerian diplomat described the appointment as both an honour and a significant responsibility, pledging to guide the committee through a period marked by budget constraints, reforms, and complex global challenges.

He expressed appreciation to member states for their support and promised to work closely with regional blocs, committee officials, and the UN Secretariat to ensure effective handling of the committee’s work.

“The challenges before us require collective responsibility and decisive action,” he said, stressing the need for prudent management of resources to help the UN deliver on its global mandate.

Ibrahim also acknowledged ongoing financial difficulties facing the United Nations, including delays in contributions from some member states, and urged countries to meet their obligations to ensure the system’s sustainability.

He highlighted continuing UN reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and institutional performance.

The Nigerian envoy further pointed to global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, insecurity, poverty, and rapid technological change, noting that coordinated international action remains essential.

He emphasised consensus-building among the UN’s 193 member states, saying inclusiveness and cooperation would be central to his leadership approach.

Drawing on his experience in Nigeria’s National Assembly, particularly in budgetary and inter-parliamentary work, Ibrahim expressed confidence in his ability to foster cooperation and deliver results.

Observers said his emergence marks a notable diplomatic milestone for Nigeria, reflecting the country’s growing influence in multilateral governance.

The Fifth Committee plays a central role in shaping the UN’s administrative and financial structure, making its leadership critical to discussions on budget reform and institutional efficiency.
