RCCG debunks claim of Adeboye’s protest against Jonathan

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has dismissed claims that its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, ever led or participated in a protest against former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying a viral photograph being circulated online has been misrepresented.

The church clarified the issue in a statement released via its official public relations platform on X, amid renewed online debate over Adeboye’s past public engagements and comments on national issues.

According to RCCG, the image being shared as evidence of a protest was taken out of context and falsely linked to political demonstrations against the Jonathan administration.

The church explained that the photograph showing Adeboye holding a placard was captured during a peaceful nationwide walk organised in response to a directive from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

It stated that the exercise took place during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and was focused on drawing attention to insecurity and the killing of Christians across the country.

“The walk in Ebute Metta, where Pastor Adeboye participated, was part of that nationwide exercise. It was neither organized against President Goodluck Jonathan nor connected in any way to his administration,” the church said.

RCCG noted that the image had resurfaced years later on social media, with claims that it represented a protest against a different government, which it described as false.

The church said Adeboye’s participation in the walk was centred on advocacy for the protection of human life and national security, rather than political opposition.

It also rejected suggestions that the cleric has remained silent on national challenges, insisting that he has consistently spoken on issues such as insecurity and terrorism.

The statement referenced remarks made during the November 2025 Holy Ghost Service, where Adeboye called for stronger action against insecurity.

“When they eliminate the terrorists, ask them to eliminate their sponsors too,” he was quoted as saying.

RCCG further stressed that it is not aligned with any political party and does not engage in partisan activities, adding that Adeboye does not hold any political office.

The church urged the public to verify information about its activities through official channels before sharing, warning against the spread of misleading claims.
“Facts matter. Context matters. Truth matters,” the statement added.
