NDC Moves to Reinforce Party Supremacy, Discipline and Financial Transparency

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has adopted a series of new internal rules aimed at strengthening discipline, improving accountability, and reinforcing party unity as it prepares for future elections.

The decisions were reached during the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and were announced in a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Osa Directo.

A key resolution from the meeting was
the approval to develop a formal Code of Conduct for party officials, elected representatives, and political aspirants.

The document would be drafted by a committee headed by the National Legal Adviser and is expected to establish clear ethical and behavioral standards across the party.

The NEC also reaffirmed the principle of party supremacy, stating that all elected officials on the party’s platform must consult party structures on major policy decisions, programmes, and political appointments.

However, it clarified that personal staff appointments would remain at the discretion of individual office holders.

To enhance internal order, the party directed that all affiliated groups, support organisations, and related associations must operate under the supervision of official party structures rather than function independently.

In addition, the NEC emphasised loyalty to the party over personal ambition, insisting that members and aspirants prioritize the collective interests of the organisation at all times.

On internal governance and conflict resolution, the party inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee tasked with engaging dissatisfied members and resolving disputes in order to promote unity and stability.

Financial accountability was also a major focus.

The NEC mandated stricter controls over party funds, requiring that all resources managed by officials be used strictly for party activities.

It further directed candidates to fully disclose campaign donations and expenditures through approved party channels.

Overall, the reforms are designed to strengthen transparency, discipline, and institutional stability, as the NDC seeks to position itself as a long-term political institution rather than one driven by individuals or factions.
