Tinubu Hosts Madagascar President In Abuja

President Bola Tinubu on Monday received Madagascar’s President, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the island nation.
The meeting formed part of Randrianirina’s official visit to Nigeria and provided an opportunity for both leaders to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss issues of mutual interest.
President Randrianirina was welcomed by President Tinubu during a private audience held at the seat of Nigeria’s government, where both leaders exchanged pleasantries and held discussions behind closed doors.
The visit comes several months after Randrianirina assumed office as President of Madagascar following a dramatic political transition in the country.
The army colonel was sworn into office in October 2025, shortly after a military takeover that reshaped Madagascar’s political landscape and led to the departure of former President Andry Rajoelina from power.
Prior to becoming president, Randrianirina commanded the CAPSAT army unit, which played a key role during the political upheaval.
The unit reportedly mutinied and aligned with anti-government demonstrators before the military announced it had taken control of government affairs.
The takeover followed the impeachment of former President Rajoelina, who was accused of desertion of duty and subsequently fled the country.
Randrianirina’s emergence as president marked the beginning of a new administration in Madagascar, with his government moving to stabilise the country and restore political order after the transition.
Monday’s meeting with President Tinubu underscores growing diplomatic engagement between African leaders and highlights Nigeria’s continued role in fostering regional cooperation and dialogue across the continent.
Although details of the discussions were not immediately disclosed, the visit is expected to contribute to stronger ties between both countries in areas of governance, trade, diplomacy and continental development.
Photographs released from the Presidential Villa showed the two leaders in cordial discussions, reflecting the warm relations between Nigeria and Madagascar.
The meeting also provided another platform for both nations to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration as African countries continue to pursue stronger partnerships aimed at advancing economic growth, political stability and regional integration
