Fubara Hails Democracy as Best Option

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has described democracy as the most suitable system of government for Nigeria, arguing that the country’s ethnic, religious and cultural diversity makes democratic governance the best framework for promoting unity, inclusion and national development.

The governor made the assertion in his message marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration, stressing that democratic rule remains the most effective means of managing Nigeria’s complex social structure while ensuring that citizens have a voice in governance.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, Fubara said June 12 occupies a special place in Nigeria’s history because it symbolised the nation’s struggle for freedom, justice and representative government.

He noted that the occasion provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices made by individuals who fought to entrench democratic values and protect the rights of citizens.

Paying tribute to the heroes of the pro-democracy movement, the governor specifically honoured the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola and numerous other patriots whose efforts helped shape the country’s democratic journey.

According to him, their courage and commitment to democratic ideals continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.

“June 12 is a reminder of the price paid for the democracy we enjoy today. The sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, and many other patriots who laid the foundation for the democratic journey we continue to enjoy today.

”Their commitment to the principle that power must ultimately reside with the people remains a source of inspiration for every generation of Nigerians,” he said.

Fubara observed that despite various political and socio-economic challenges, Nigeria’s democratic system has continued to mature and evolve over the years.

He stated that one of the major gains of democratic governance is the ability of citizens to freely express their opinions, participate in public affairs and elect leaders through established constitutional processes.

According to the governor, these freedoms represent significant achievements that must be protected and strengthened for the benefit of future generations.

He further argued that Nigeria’s diversity should not be viewed as a source of division but rather as a national asset capable of driving progress when effectively managed through democratic institutions and inclusive governance.

The governor emphasised that democracy provides a platform through which different groups can coexist peacefully while contributing to national growth and stability.

Fubara also commended President Bola Tinubu for efforts being made under the Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing optimism that ongoing reforms would contribute to national development.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Rivers State Government to working closely with the Federal Government in addressing issues relating to development, economic growth and security.

The governor urged Nigerians to remain committed to the principles of accountability, justice and national unity, stressing that democratic governance can only thrive when citizens actively participate in the process.

He noted that democracy should not be limited to periodic elections but should also be reflected in everyday governance, civic engagement and responsible leadership.

According to him, the collective responsibility of government and citizens alike is essential to sustaining democratic gains and building a more prosperous and inclusive nation.

As the country marks another Democracy Day anniversary, Fubara called on Nigerians to continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and advancing the ideals upon which the nation’s democracy is founded.
