Canada Earn Historic World Cup Home Point

Canada national football team fought back to secure a 1–1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team on Friday in Toronto, earning their first-ever point in World Cup history during the opening match of the tournament on Canadian soil.

The encounter, played at the Toronto Stadium, saw Bosnia take the lead in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukić rose highest to head in from a corner, silencing much of the home crowd while energising a small but vocal travelling support.

Canada, co-hosts of the tournament, dominated possession for large spells in the first half but struggled to convert control into clear scoring chances.

Their brightest early moment came in the 17th minute when Jonathan David found space inside the box, only to be denied by Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj.

The pressure continued as Ismaël Koné squandered a promising opportunity in the 30th minute, firing over from a good position, drawing frustration from fans packed into a stadium awash with red.

Bosnia nearly doubled their lead when defender Sead Kolašinac cleared a goal-bound effort off the line, keeping Canada’s hopes alive as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser.

The breakthrough eventually came in the 78th minute when Cyle Larin struck to level the match, sending the home crowd of over 40,000 into celebration and marking a significant moment in Canada’s World Cup journey.

Canada pushed for a winner in the closing stages, coming close again near full time, but were unable to complete the turnaround.

The match also drew high-profile attention, with entertainment figures including Ryan Reynolds and Mike Myers in attendance, adding to the atmosphere at a historic night for Canadian football.

For Canada, the result ends a long wait for a World Cup point after previous appearances in 1986 and 2022 ended in defeat across all matches, making the draw a symbolic milestone as they begin life on home soil in the competition.
